~**Προβληματισμός αλλά και στήριξη στον πρωθυπουργό

* Προβληματισμός επικρατεί στο εσωτερικό του ΠΑΣΟΚ, σχετικά με τη λειτουργία της κυβέρνησης και παρά το γεγονός ότι οι τοποθετήσεις των βουλευτών στη συνεδρίαση της Κ.Ο. έδειξε στήριξη στην προσπάθεια του πρωθυπουργού.-

~** Απολογιστική συνέντευξη Χριστόφια για το Κυπριακό

* Βολές κατά της Τουρκίας εξαπέλυσε σε συνέντευξη Τύπου για το Κυπριακό ο Κύπριος Πρόεδρος Δημήτρης Χριστόφιας, ο οποίος κατηγόρησε την Άγκυρα πως καθοδηγεί την τουρκοκυπριακή ηγεσία στη σκλήρυνση των θέσεών της. -

~** «Τελευταία ευκαιρία για τη χώρα»

 * Ως «τελευταία ευκαιρία και για τη χώρα αλλά και για την κυβέρνηση», χαρακτηρίζει ο υπουργός Υγείας, Ανδρέας Λοβέρδος, τον Οδικό Χάρτη που εξήγγειλε ο πρωθυπουργός μέχρι το 2015.
* Σε συνέντευξή του στην «Καθημερινή της Κυριακής» και σχετικά με την επίθεση που δέχθηκε, στο περιθώριο κομματικής εκδήλωσης του ΠΑΣΟΚ στους Αγίους Αναργύρους, έκανε λόγο για αμιγώς πολιτικό ζήτημα επισημαίνοντας πως το θέμα θα έρθει στη Βουλή, προκειμένου όλοι να αναλάβουν τις ευθύνες τους.
* «Άλλο η διαμαρτυρία κι άλλο να πλησιάζει κάποιος έναν πολιτικό, με απόφαση να τον χτυπήσει», τονίζει ο κ. Λοβέρδος και κάνει λόγο «για αντισυγκεντρωσίες οι οποίοι, όπως στη χούντα, ήρθαν για να χτυπήσουν». Αναφερόμενος στη νέα πρόταση της κυβέρνησης για την οικονομία, ο υπουργός Υγείας, εκτιμά πως μπορεί να ξεπεραστεί η κρίση αν το πρόγραμμα εφαρμοστεί μέχρι κεραίας.
* Αίσθηση, πάντως, προκαλεί το γεγονός ότι ο κ. Λοβέρδος ζητά να μην υπάρξει καμία πρόσληψη στο Δημόσιο μέχρι να ξεπεραστεί η κρίση. -

~** «Το Μνημόνιο έχει καταρρεύσει»

 * Σκληρή κριτική στην κυβέρνηση για την πολιτική που ακολουθεί ασκεί ο Αλέξης Τσίπρας. Σε συνέντευξή του, που δημοσιεύει ο «Τύπος της Κυριακής», τονίζει, χαρακτηριστικά, πως τα νούμερα δεν βγαίνουν, το Μνημόνιο έχει καταρρεύσει και καλεί την κυβέρνηση «να βάλει επιτέλους όρια».
* Μια κυβέρνηση που θέλει να υπερασπιστεί το λαό και βάζει όρια, αναγκάζει εν τέλει τους κερδοσκόπους να τα αποδεχτούν, για να μην τα χάσουν όλα», δηλώνει χαρακτηριστικά ο πρόεδρος της ΚΟ του ΣΥΡΙΖΑ και εκφράζει την εκτίμηση πως «η κυβέρνηση θα αναγκαστεί να προχωρήσει σε αναδιάρθρωση του χρέους».
* «Το Μνημόνιο κατέρρευσε, μαγειρεύεται λοιπόν νέο μνημόνιο», σημειώνει και καλεί την κυβέρνηση να μην αποσυρθεί οριστικά από δραστηριότητες που μειώνουν τη φτώχεια, στην πράξη.
* Σχετικά με τα επεισόδια σε βάρος του Ανδρέα Λοβέρδου στους Αγίους Αναργύρους, ο κ. Τσίπρας κάνει λόγο για «κυβερνητική προβοκάτσια εναντίον του ΣΥΡΙΖΑ, με στόχο να αποπροσανατολίσει την κοινή γνώμη».
* Όσον αφορά στο μέλλον της Αριστεράς, κάνει λόγο για συστράτευση ακόμα και με πρώην ηγετικά στελέχη, όπως είναι οι κ.κ. Αλαβάνος και Κωσταντόπουλος, τονίζοντας πως στην πολιτική δεν χωρούν ούτε πείσματα, ούτε εμμονές. -

~** Ικανοποίηση ΔΝΤ για αποκρατικοποιήσεις

 * Η Ελλάδα δεν θα πρέπει να χαλαρώσει τις προσπάθειές της και θα είναι σε θέση να επιστρέψει στις αγορές για να μπορέσει να αναχρηματοδοτήσει το κολοσσιαίο χρέος της, εκτίμησε χθες ο υπεύθυνος της Ευρωπαϊκής Διεύθυνσης του ΔΝΤ, Αντόνιο Μπόρχες.
* «Δεν πρέπει αυτή τη στιγμή, να εγκαταλειφθεί ή να χαλαρώσει η αποφασιστικότητα», τόνισε ο ίδιος σε συνέντευξη Τύπου, στο περιθώριο της εαρινής συνόδου του ΔΝΤ, στην Ουάσιγκτον.
* Ο ίδιος παραδέχθηκε πως η Ελλάδα και η Ιρλανδία, που έχουν προσφύγει στον μηχανισμό δανεισμού των Ευρωπαίων και του Ταμείου, βρίσκονται «στην πλέον δύσκολη στιγμή του κύκλου», διότι ναι μεν αυτές οι χώρες έχουν καταβάλλει σημαντικές χρηματοοικονομικές προσπάθειες, αλλά θα πρέπει να « αναμένουν αρκετούς μήνες έως ότου επιτύχουν οικονομική ανάκαμψη και αρχίσουν να βλέπουν φως στο τέλος του τούνελ».
* Ο Μπόρχες έσπευσε ωστόσο να διευκρινίσει πως οι χώρες αυτές βρίσκονται στον σωστό δρόμο.
* «Εμείς δεν πρόκειται ποτέ να εμπλακούμε σε ένα πρόγραμμα, εάν δεν πιστεύουμε πως το πρόβλημα αυτό δύναται να επιλυθεί, πως το χρέος μπορεί να εξυπηρετηθεί», απάντησε το στέλεχος του ΔΝΤ, απαντώντας στις πιεστικές ερωτήσεις, για το ενδεχόμενο αναδιάρθρωσης του ελληνικού χρέους.
* «Το πρόγραμμα (οικονομικού δανεισμού στην Αθήνα) εξασφαλίζει ότι η Ελλάδα θα επιστρέψει στις αγορές και ότι θα είναι σε θέση να επιβεβαιώσει την εξυπηρέτηση του χρέους της. Εγώ πιστεύω πως το πρόγραμμα αυτό μέλλει να στεφθεί από επιτυχία», τόνισε ο Μπόρχες.
* Ο ίδιος χαιρέτισε επίσης και το πρόγραμμα αποκρατικοποιήσεων που ανακοίνωσε χθες η ελληνική κυβέρνηση, αναφέροντας χαρακτηριστικά ότι«ίσως είναι τα καλύτερα νέα σ’ αυτούς τους τελευταίους μήνες».
* «Όταν είχαμε διαπραγματευθεί το πρόγραμμα βοήθειας, εμείς δεν είχαμε κατά νου ένα τέτοιο σενάριο αποκρατικοποίησεων», σημείωσε ο Μπόρχες, προσθέτοντας πως η Ελλάδα διαθέτει ιδιωτικοποιήσιμα αγαθά που αντιπροσωπεύουν πάνω από το 100% του ΑΕΠ της. -

~** Η σύζυγος Πάγκαλου απαιτεί αποζημίωση ύψους 300.000 ευρώ

 Αγωγή κατά μιας κατοίκου της Κερατέας κατέθεσε η σύζυγος του Αντιπρόεδρου της Κυβέρνησης Θεόδωρου Πάγκαλου, κ. Χριστίνα Χριστοφάκη, για όσα είπε η κάτοικος σε πρόσφατη εκπομπή του Λάκη Λαζόπουλου, ζητώντας μάλιστα από την ενάγουσα το ποσό των 300.000 ευρώ και την κράτησή της για 12 μήνες!  ... ΤΑ ΠΑΝΤΑ ΡΕΙ ! Ηράκλητος .-

~**Εικόνα διάλυσης στο ΙΚΑ, ταλαιπωρία ασφαλισμένων

 * Χωρίς ελεγκτή ιατρό έμεινε χθες το απόγευμα το ΙΚΑ Καλαμάτας, με αποτέλεσμα την ταλαιπωρία ασφαλισμένων. Συγκεκριμένα, επειδή από τη μονάδα έλειπαν με άδεια και οι δύο τακτικοί ελεγκτές ιατροί (εκτός από τον Δ. Μαστοράκη, ο οποίος βρίσκεται εκεί το πρωί), για τις απογευματινές ώρες ορίστηκε ένας έκτακτος, ο οποίος όμως δεν είχε σφραγίδα για να εγκρίνει συνταγές των ασφαλισμένων ή άλλα αιτήματα.
*  Έτσι, όσοι χρειάζονταν θεώρηση για διάφορα θέματα και, κυρίως, για συνταγές ακριβών φαρμάκων (καρδιολογικά, πνευμονολογικά, κ.λπ.), με κόστος άνω των 150 ευρώ, έπρεπε να περιμένουν μέχρι τη Μ. Δευτέρα, για να πάρουν την έγκριση και να τα προμηθευτούν από το φαρμακείο, αφού ο φαρμακοποιός δεν τα παρέχει χωρίς τη σφραγίδα του ελεγκτή. -

~** Πελοπόννησος

 "Ρεκορντγούμαν" στα "κόκκινα" δάνεια
*   Η Περιφέρεια Πελοποννήσου μαζί με τη Θράκη και τη Θεσσαλία είναι οι τρεις πρώτες Περιφέρειες της χώρας που εμφανίζουν τις υψηλότερες καθυστερήσεις στην αποπληρωμή καταναλωτικών δανείων.
* Λιγότερο άσχημη, αλλά εξίσου ανησυχητική είναι η κατάσταση με το χρόνο αποπληρωμής των στεγαστικών δανείων, καθώς κι εδώ η Περιφέρειά μας είναι μέσα στην πρώτη πεντάδα.-

~**Δήμος Καλαμάτας

* Εκδηλώσεις για την υποδοχή κρουαζιερόπλοιου
* Τα… καλά της ετοιμάζεται να φορέσει σήμερα η πόλη της Καλαμάτας, προκειμένου να υποδεχθεί τους επιβάτες του κρουαζερόπλοιου «Minerva», το οποίο αναμένεται να καταπλεύσει στο λιμάνι της μεσσηνιακής πρωτεύουσας νωρίς το πρωί, μεταφέροντας 400 επισκέπτες, στην πλειοψηφία τους Άγγλους. Σύμφωνα με το πρόγραμμα που έχει ετοιμαστεί, οι ξένοι τουρίστες πρόκειται να επισκεφθούν την Αρχαία Μεσσήνη, την Αρεόπολη, ενώ θα περιηγηθούν για κάποιες ώρες και στην πόλη της Καλαμάτας.
* Επίσης σήμερα αναμένεται να προσγειωθεί στην πόλη μας και η πρώτη πτήση τσάρτερ, η οποία μεταφέρει 148 Νορβηγούς επιβάτες.-

~** Δήμοι Περιφέρειας

** Ξεκίνησε η κούρσα για γαλάζιο υποψήφιο
 * Αν και δεν έχει υπογραφεί καλά καλά η υπουργική απόφαση, στη Νέα Δημοκρατία εξετάζουν τα σενάρια και τα ονόματα που μπορεί να ηγηθούν του ψηφοδελτίου που θα λάβει μέρος στις εκλογές για την Περιφερειακή Ένωση Δήμων Πελοποννήσου.
 * Μάλιστα, όπως έγινε γνωστό, για το λόγο αυτό πραγματοποιήθηκε σύσκεψη την περασμένη Τετάρτη στην Τρίπολη μεταξύ των δημάρχων της Περιφέρειας που πρόσκεινται στο κόμμα της Νέας Δημοκρατίας. Όπως ήταν φυσικό, από αυτή δεν προέκυψε κάποιο συγκεκριμένο όνομα, αλλά έχουν ήδη ξεκινήσει οι ζυμώσεις και οι σχετικές διαβουλεύσεις, με σκοπό, όταν ψηφιστεί το αντίστοιχο Προεδρικό Διάταγμα, να υπάρχει μια πρώτη… μαγιά συζητήσεων.-

~** Ερώτηση Ανατολάκη

** Για τοξικά ναυάγια από Παξούς έως Μεσσηνία
* Ερώτηση για τοξικά και πυρηνικά απόβλητα που έχουν βυθιστεί με ιταλικά πλοία από τους Παξούς ως τις ακτές της Μεσσηνίας κατέθεσε στη Βουλή ο βουλευτής της Β΄ Πειραιώς του ΛΑΟΣ Γιώργος Ανατολάκης.
* Το θέμα είχε απασχολήσει και παλαιότερα την κοινή γνώμη, χωρίς, ωστόσο, να δοθούν ποτέ σαφείς απαντήσεις.-

* Παρουσίαση οφελών της κομποστοποίησης

~** Σύμφωνα με τη Στατιστική Αρχή

** Στο 10,3% η "επίσημη" ανεργία στην Πελοπόννησο
* Η ανεργία αρχίζει να δείχνει τα... δόντια της και στην Περιφέρεια Πελοποννήσου.
* Σύμφωνα με έρευνα της Ελληνικής Στατιστικής Αρχής, από 9% που ήταν το 2010 «σκαρφάλωσε» τους πρώτους τέσσερις μήνες του 2011 στο 10,3%, κι όπως φανερώνουν όλα τα στοιχεία, ο… ανήφορος θα συνεχιστεί και τους επόμενους μήνες, με καταστρεπτικά αποτελέσματα για χιλιάδες οικογένειες της περιοχής μας.-

* Συνάντηση για το «καλάθι» της Πελοποννήσου
*  Η πρώτη συνάντηση για την αγροτική πολιτική στην Πελοπόννησο, με τίτλο «Καλάθι Προϊόντων», πραγματοποιήθηκε χθες στην Τρίπολη. Σε αυτή έλαβε μέρος κοινή ομάδα του υπουργείου Αγροτικής Ανάπτυξης και Τροφίμων και της Περιφέρειας Πελοποννήσου, με συμμετοχή του γενικού γραμματέα του υπουργείου, του περιφερειάρχη Πέτρου Τατούλη, της θεματικής αντιπεριφερειάρχη Ντίνας Νικολάκου, καθώς και παραγωγικών φορέων της Περιφέρειας. -

***  Στην Τρίπολη για θέματα Πολιτισμού - Τουρισμού
*  Η ανάπτυξη της Πελοποννήσου στους τομείς πολιτισμού, τουρισμού και αθλητισμού θα αναλυθεί τη Μεγάλη Δευτέρα στην ειδική συνεδρίαση του Περιφερειακού Συμβουλίου Πελοποννήσου, το οποίο θα διεξαχθεί με τη συμμετοχή του υπουργού Πολιτισμού και Τουρισμού, Παύλου Γερουλάνου.-

* Το Περιφερειακό Συμβούλιο, δυστυχώς, επιβεβαίωσε τις ανησυχίες μας και, όπως όλα δείχνουν, στόχος είναι η παραχώρηση της διαχείρισης απορριμμάτων σε ιδιώτη. Μέσα από διεθνή διαγωνισμό, ο οποίος θα είναι «ανοιχτός σε όλες τις διαθέσιμες τεχνολογίες» και θα αφορά στην «ολική διαχείριση των απορριμμάτων σε επίπεδο Περιφέρειας», ετοιμάζεται η επιλογή της καύσης και της ενεργειακής κερδοσκοπίας μέσω της πώλησης ενέργειας.-

* Taxation causes an enormous and unnecessary dead-weight loss to the economic system. This waste of resources unnecessarily reduces economic growth and job creation. A major reason this obscenity persists is that few kleptocrats think seriously about the consequences of what they have done and are doing, or just don't care.
* The income tax has become much more progressive in the past thirty years, resulting in a situation in which a relatively small minority of taxpayers pay the bulk of the taxes, while most citizens pay little or any income tax. This is causing an increasing disconnect between benefits from government and what most citizens pay for. One result is a greater polarization in the political realm where a majority of citizens increasingly demand more government benefits for which they want others to pay.
* It makes no sense to tax corporations at all, because only people pay taxes, not legal entities. The corporate tax is paid by customers in terms of higher prices, by suppliers in terms of lower volumes of business, by employees in terms of lower wages, and by stockholders in terms of lower returns.
* All other persons and groups in society, except for acknowledged and sporadic

criminals such as thieves and bank robbers, obtain their income voluntarily:

either by selling goods and services to the consuming public, or by voluntary

gift. Only the State obtains its revenue by coercion, by threatening dire

penalties should the income not be forthcoming. That coercion is known as

taxation. Taxation is theft, purely and simply, even though it is theft on a

grand and colossal scale which no acknowledged criminals could hope to match. It

is a compulsory seizure of the property of the State's inhabitants, or subjects.
* There was no permanent income tax in the United States for 125 years. Can anyone

possibly say that the government didn't have enough revenue to function during

that time? It wasn't until the adoption of the Sixteenth Amendment in 1913 that

the redistributionist road was paved for an income tax. And what benefits has

the increased government revenue from the income tax given us? It is the income

tax that has made possible World War I, the New Deal, World War II, the Great

Society, the Vietnam War, and our current welfare-warfare state.
* Every penny of our money that the government allows us to keep is a good thing,

whether it results from a decrease in the tax rates, the lowering of tax

brackets, or an increase in deductions, loopholes, exemptions, and credits.
* The income tax system is a vast income redistribution and social engineering

scheme. The income tax code doesn't need to be simplified, shortened, fairer, or

less intrusive. The income tax rates don't need to be made lower, flatter,

equal, or less progressive. The income tax doesn't need more or larger

deductions, loopholes, credits, or exemptions. The whole rotten system needs to

be eliminated if we are to starve the beast that is the state leviathan and

strictly limit government spending to only what is constitutionally authorized.
* When an economy suffers from erectile dysfunction, via-grab does not work, but

only via-cut. The via recommended is to cut taxes, not grab more taxes. There

are limits to how much government can tax before it kills the host. Even worse,

when government attempts to subsidize prices, it has the net effect of inflating

them instead. The economic reality is that you cannot distort natural market

pressures without unintended consequences. Market forces would drive prices

down. Government meddling negates these pressures, adds regulatory compliance

costs and layers of bureaucracy, and in the end, drives prices up.
* Millions of innocent people have died of hypertension caused by agony on taxes.

Millions of concerned citizens are joining modern day tea parties of the Global

Tax Revolt, named after the Boston Tea Party of 1773. They are protesting

governments that, in the wake of today's financial crisis, are rapidly

strangling their freedom, with endless bailouts, mounting regulations, reckless

spending, and the promise of a crippling tax burden. Correctly sensing that

freedom is being discarded, they seek to battle this trend by taking to the

streets to register their outrage.
* Government does not trickle the money down or up. Government simply spends it,

almost always wastefully. There's a simple moral and psychological explanation

for this. When you're given money, or seize money by force, in the case of taxes

it's legalized plunder, then you don't handle that money as responsibly as you

would if it were your own. There's no way to control wasteful government

spending because government spending will always, by its nature, be largely

wasteful and irresponsible. The only solution to this is to severely limit the

role of government as much as possible. Lower taxes are a good thing not only

because they leave wealth in the hands of the more productive; low taxes are

also good, because the government has less to do.
* If you think the West has been productive and prosperous up to now, just imagine

how it would be if most of government as we know it went away. It's bad enough

that government takes income from the private sector and squanders it.

Government is making decisions that people should be making for themselves. If

something isn't going to happen without government funds, then it quite likely

should not happen in the first place. When people make decisions for themselves,

they generally do a better job. And when they make a mistake, or perhaps act

with deliberate irrationality, at least there are consequences for their

actions. When government does something badly, it gets rewarded with more power,

subsidies and control.
* VAT, aka kleptocrats' grab, is a regressive tax; the poor pay higher percentage of their income. Revenues from VAT are much lower than expected, because they are difficult and costly to administer and collect. Since any double-digit VAT leads many consumers to underground economy, most vatstruck Fourthreichians evade VAT! As a matter of fact, if you are a real patriot, you should boycott shops that charge abominable VAT! VAT is the cacothanasia of Fourth Reich! Vatdodging is heroism!
* The imposition of a VAT is the precursor to bigger government. It is simply too easy for kleptocrats to raise a tax that is hidden from citizens. VAT is embedded in the final cost of the goods sold, and is hidden to the consumer. VAT is applied at every stage of consumption, from wholesale to retail. It is passed along until it literally becomes as much an inherent and cloaked component in the price as transportation or raw materials. As a result, countries that have adopted VAT have been sorely tempted to raise the rate over time.
* When VATs started out in Europe in the 1960s, they were small, usually less than 5%. Today, the average VAT rate in Europe is 20%. If your country wants to join the European Union, you have to have a minimum VAT rate of 15% so that people won't take retail shopping vacations in your cities. Norway, Denmark, and Sweden win the dubious award of having the world's highest VAT rate at 25%. This floor and ceiling of VAT prices is a clear violation of antitrust laws, price fixing, pure and simple!
* Fourth Reich(EU) forced the hateful VAT on Greece in 1987 and is the most disgusting indirect tax. Greeks are at war against their government over the abominable 23% VAT. Vatmonger Greek government harasses Greeks by pressuring them to demand receipts when they buy products. Greeks who cannot gather many receipts are penalized with more taxes! Transforming citizens to VAT enforcers is disgusting, undignified, and against basic human freedoms. President Van Rompuy should call vatmonger October-18 Papandreou, Merciless Marilizard's boss, on the carpet now.
* All the additional tax revenue from a VAT has not resulted in deficit reduction. Fourthreichian nations first began imposing VATs about 40 years ago, and the result has been bigger government, permanent deficits and more debt. Public debt is equal to 80% of GDP in fourth Reich, compared to 64 percent of GDP in the United States.
* The most important comparison is not debt, but rather the burden of government spending. If you go back to the mid-1960s, before the imposition of VATs, Fourthreichian nations had relatively modest-sized government, only slightly larger than in the United States. Adopting a VAT, however, gave politicians a giant new source of tax revenue. And just like you don't cure an alcoholic by giving him keys to a liquor store, you don't promote fiscal responsibility by giving government a new source of revenue.
* Thanks in large part to VAT, government spending in Fourth Reich now consumes 50% of GDP. This stifles growth by diverting a huge share of output from the productive sector of the economy, which helps explain why living standards are 30% below American levels. Not that Americans should get cocky. Thanks to reckless fiscal policy by Presidents Bush and Obama, the burden of government spending has now climbed above 40 percent of GDP in the United States.

Libertarian Party Executive Director Wes Benedict muses that just in time for Tax Day, the Republicans and Democrats in Congress have joined hands to clobber American taxpayers. The 2011 spending compromise will cut federal outlays from non-war accounts by just $352 million. * Neither Democrats nor Republicans have made any serious proposals to change the course of the federal government. In particular, both President Obama's and Congressman Ryan's 2012 budget proposals are absurd. Benedict fears that America will soon be overtaken by events. Inflation, high interest rates, high unemployment, and probably other unforeseen problems will start to force everyone's hand. One way or another, people aren't going to get what they have been led to expect.

**BLACK SWANS WOULD WREAK HAVOC AND COULD STOP CIVILIZATION‏

* Black swan as an event that lies outside the realm of regular expectations, carries an extreme impact, and human nature makes us concoct explanations for its occurrence after the fact. Black swans would wreak havoc and could stop civilization. The destruction of Atlantis was a black swan.

* Electromagnetic Pulse(EMP) is a high-intensity burst of electromagnetic energy caused by the rapid acceleration of charged particles. EMP is most often created from gamma rays emitted during a nuclear explosion. At altitudes between 40 to 400 kilometers, these gamma rays produce high-energy free electrons that give rise to an oscillating electric current that destroys electronic equipment. The direct effects are due to electromagnetic shocking of electronics and the stressing of electrical systems.
* Indirect effects of EMP include the cascading damage that occurs because of these shocked, damaged, and destroyed electronics and electronic systems that are embedded in critical infrastructure. These indirect effects can be even more severe than the direct effects. For example, surges might simultaneously cause electrical fires and incapacitate traffic control and emergency dispatch systems. In turn, responders will be unable to respond to resulting mass fires.
* An EMP attack could throw a country back to the pre-Industrial Revolution era. A powerful solar burst would have the same impact. Should either event occur, people would have little time to react, and the damage would be incalculable. If the West were to lose power for any prolonged period of time, mass starvation and death would become a reality.
* Matt Mayer points out that although the West has prepared for a pandemic influenza outbreak, little preparation has gone into other potential viruses. More importantly, it is the unknown virus or supervirus that represents a Black Swan for the West. 30 years ago AIDS first began embedding itself in the West. If a far more deadly and communicable virus hits the West, the West would quickly expend its existing resources.
* The West has extensive knowledge of what would happen if a nuclear or radiological explosion occurred in a major city. Theory, however, is a poor replacement for the reality of large numbers of deaths, burn victims, and physical debris.
* Mayer notes seismic activity is monitored, but tectonic shifts miles below the surface could result in the buildup of pressure and a super-volcanic eruption. The volcano beneath Yellowstone previously erupted, causing destruction as far away as California, Iowa, and Louisiana. A super-volcanic eruption, could have truly catastrophic consequences.
* Hurricanes strike with a fair degree of frequency. Mayer points out a black swan event would be a powerful hurricane that strikes a megacity, such as New York, in the same manner as Hurricane Katrina struck New Orleans. Between the massive flooding and wind damage, a megacity could sustain casualties and physical destruction well in excess of Katrina.
* A domino series of Marilizardist attacks might create a black swan of global cyber wars that might destroy the internet and modern communications.
